New Year Intentions

It’s a New Year AND a New Moon! What a great time to set intentions - whether you set them for the year, the current moon cycle (culminating at the next full moon), or the extended moon cycle (about 9 months- culminating when the Capricorn New Moon becomes a Capricorn Full Moon!), or just in general (“From now on, I’d like to…”).

I think I’ve figured out why New Year’s Resolutions don’t always work: Our gregorian calendar turns (changing the year) while the Sun is in Capricorn, which is an ideal energy for setting new Aspirations, but it only lasts for a month! It seems to me that a better idea might be to consider what energies will be available when and to try to align our aspirations with them in order to get the most out of intention-setting. So, here is your handy-dandy guide!
In my mind, the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars (the ‘personal planets’) all move too fast to mention each one here. It might be a good idea to choose one and follow it along (as I am doing with Venus! It can be very enlightening!). Or, get an astrology reading if you are wondering how to put them to use!

The further, slower, ‘generational’ planets are going to be my focus, because they stay in one sign for the whole year (or may enter a second one very late in the year) and thus seem more suited to all-encompassing New Year’s ‘Resolutions’ (Aspirations/Intentions) that we can work with the whole year through.

A note on intentions with the celestial energies: Far better it is [it seems to me] to use these available energies consciously, with intention, than to be unwittingly side-swiped by them! Eh? That is all on this matter for now.

So, what planets are we dealing with?! We will take a look at Pluto, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, and Jupiter.

This year, Pluto will be in Capricorn [still]: The planet who represents deep transformation, intensity, and power will be in the sign that represents practicality, ambition, time management, structure, responsibility & success. My shorthand for this combination reads something like:
Deep Practicality or Transform Ambitions or Empowered Success or something like that. If any of those make sense to you, go ahead and use them for yourself! In order to ‘channel’ or ‘honor’ this energy combination, you might consider working to align your deep inner world with the practical elements of your outer world - this will, of course, mean something different for each person, but here’s one example: Re-examine what to accomplish.

Picture
Neptune is [still] in Pisces. This means that there is a lot of energy available for dreamy envisioning and imaginative creativity, for spirituality and compassion, and for intuitive sensitivity. One idea of how to bring this into a few juicy word nuggets looks like this: Visioning Selfless Service. Is there a group or individual you feel drawn to serve? Imagine what you could do… And then do it! Another way to channel or honor this energy might be to spend time daydreaming or blissing out to your favorite music or forgetting the hour while engrossed in the creative process or praying or meditating for days on end (not always practical -see above!- but certainly Neptune in Pisces modes of operation!).

Picture
Uranus is [still!] in Aries! The planet of unpredictability, electricity, and sudden change is in the sign of self-hood, assertiveness, action, passion, aggression, leadership, and warriorship. What a combo! If your natal Uranus is in Libra, you have been or will be really feeling this placement! It may show up in relationships as a tension between self and other or ‘me’ and ‘us’. Good luck if this is you- and please know that I am here to offer support on this matter if this transit is affecting you adversely. Sometimes, there are ways to ease difficult transits by channeling some of the energy to other parts of the chart through the astrological/energetic ‘channels’ that may be available in your chart. It varies greatly from chart to chart. At any rate, the shorthand for this combination might be something like: Revolutionary Assertiveness, Radical Leadership, Sudden Change of Passion, etc. To ‘channel’ or ‘honor’ this energy, you may consider giving your physical activity an overhaul (try a whole new exercise regime, for example), or diving deep into a brand-new passion (a weekend retreat for learning karate?). By doing this, you may avoid some potential aggression in relationships (it would be difficult for me to say with any degree of certainty without peering at the specifics of your chart, but if you are aware, you can probably feel it out on your own! I find that most people are pretty in tune with the energies at hand when they are able to stay out of their own way!).

Picture
Saturn is hanging out in Sagittarius: The planet of limits, structure, discipline, work, fear, and time in the sign of expansion, religion, philosophy, travel, adventure, questing, & truth-seeking. Shorthand for this combo could be: Structured Adventure, Disciplined Questing, Working Travel. Ways to channel or honor the energies are hinted at in the shorthand, and more specific examples might include: Weekly Hikes, Daily Reading and Research, Getting paid to Travel, etc.

Finally, Jupiter is in Virgo! The planet of expansion, good luck, generosity and publishing in the sign of focus, analysis, cleansing, service, devotion, and health (particularly through food). Shorthand might be: Expansive Health, Generous Service, Publishing Findings, etc. Honor this energy by eating lots of organic, whole foods and by volunteering at a charitable kitchen (I will be doing this for Rahab’s Sisters this spring! You can, too!).

That’s the summary of the planets, and, if you happen to have your natal chart, you can see in which house each of these signs falls in order to get even more specific in your intention-setting! For example, Pluto-in-Capricorn will be dancing in (‘transiting’) my 6th house- the house of Service, Work, & Health. My chosen intention for this energy this year has to do with Transforming my Daily Details and Rhythms for greater Success! If you would like to look up your natal chart, you can do so here: astro.com (you will need to know the time you were born to get the houses correct, in addition to the date and city of birth, which is enough to find out your planets and signs) or schedule a reading with me! I’d be happy to help you hone your intentions for greater specificity (and thus, success!) this year!

Picture
Another idea would be to set an intention for each sign the SUN moves through over the year… Which basically amounts to one new intention per month. If you understand the signs, you could try this type of intention-setting. Or, again, you could schedule an appointment with me and we could dig into it together. Otherwise- perhaps I’ll write a blog on that next year!

At any rate, I recommend getting into your intention setting right away if you haven’t tended to it, yet. The new moon in Capricorn with the Sun in Capricorn is a good time to look forward and make plans!

Happy Cappy Planning, friends!
Blessings to you this year!
