For the first three of these ‘events’ there is a common theme having to do with a shifting of the elements. The first three Mercury Retrograde periods begin in an earth sign, transgress back for a dip into fire (giving us a chance to recover something we forgot? and/or prepare us for the next round of Mercury Retrogrades that are all in fire signs starting this winter!), and progress back into earth to ground the inspiration and passion (and ‘spice’!) that the fire signs offer.
The image for this first Mercury Retrograde period that we’ve just been through (started Dec. 18 and just ended Jan. 7, though we’ll be in ‘the shadow’ until Jan. 27, so you’ve still got some time to work with this energy as the return to ‘normal’ plays itself out over the next few weeks) is a big, solid, book with two hands holding it as if it were a treasure (or perhaps it’s a tiny, ancient, all-important tomb of Truth and Meaning). It feels like finding a ‘Good Book’ that you can really believe in and get behind and use to guide your thoughts/actions. It could be anything: a Holy Book, a personal manifesto, a Family History, a Book of Shadows, some Akashic Records, your DNA, your favorite zine or poetry chapbook, some esoteric anthology of yore, your diary, your favorite cookbook, your accounting, your collection of puffy stickers… Whatever it is, it is full of your passion, inspiration, your philosophies and beliefs and can serve as a guide in the coming times. (PLEASE NOTE: This does not have to be an actual ‘book’, it is more the idea of a book, subject to change as the times change, but also with some staying power that offers you support and direction when you need it, but not necessarily an eternal dogma.) Going forward, we will continue the work of building structures based on our beliefs (the work of Saturn in Sagittarius for the past year or two!), this is a chance to make sure we are on the right track, that we have the right blueprints!
Spicy chocolate reminds us to put a little pep in our step - even when doing or dealing with Taurus-y things or working in a Taurean manner (maybe especially then! For Taurus can be slow, steady, methodical, stuck!). It seems this Mercury Retrograde period is a time to blend our spicy individualism with our steady, sensual ways. To enjoy our personal pleasures with some punch! To think with our bodies AND our egos. To say out loud who we are. Brave sensuality.
Woman ‘Hermit’ holding a lit lantern aloft. The Hermit is the Tarot Archetype that is said to correspond to the sign of the Sovereign Maiden. The Hermit’s job is to shine their inner light of wisdom in order to serve others. Looking at this symbol through the lense of the Lion - and with a female replacing the typical male figure depicted in most tradiitonal tarot decks modeled after the Rider-Waite-Smith deck offer - leads me to understand that a gentle firmness may be required of us for this Retrograde period. Leo corresponds to the Strength card, which often depicts a female figure taming a wild Lion. Besides which, the ‘stationary’ star, Regulus, will be conjoined by Mercury during this retrograde, re-activating the magical point of the Leo-Virgo transition which does blend the solar leonine with the virgoan feminine (more on that here). So, let your love light and wisdom light both shine together, serving yourself and others with your gentle, powerful, insightful offerings.
A person reflecting and reconsidering their beliefs and intentions. At this time of year (in December, I mean), I can see how this aptly relates to celebrating the season, the holidays, gift-giving, the ‘reason for the season’ (there are many! which do you choose to hold as your personal beliefs?). It is also the close of the year: 2017! How did it go? What can we change for next year? Where can we generously offer our passions, beliefs, and spice? What is fun? All of these things and more might be on our (higher) minds this winter. I feel like I can already almost reach it from here! And, yet- we have the whole year to go through before we get there. I will be here, going through it with you, and offering symbolic insight. Be sure to subscribe (to the RSS feed, to the email newsletter, to the podcast) to stay together for the journey! Blessings to you in 2017! May the planets align in your favor. <3
